Toledo rolls over Quad City, 6-3

The Quad City Jr. Flames had trouble finding ways to stop the Toledo Cherokee, which beat Jr. Flames, 6-3.

Toledo racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game the Cherokee had been spending in the box. Toledo made Quad City's netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, firing 60 shots and forcing 54 saves. Robby Vukelich made 42 stops and Hunter Tetreault made 12. The Cherokee put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jr. Flames to score on any of their five power plays. Toledo found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Cherokee average 3.5 goals per game.

Toledo was helped by Ben Torchia, who registered one goal and two assists. Torchia scored 2:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toledo. Jake Manders picked up the assist. Toledo also got points from Jordan Prewitt, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Blake Podgorski, who also had one goal and two assists. Toledo also had goals scored by Brandon Layman, who had one and Jordan Fogarty, who had two. In addition, Toledo received assists from Tyler Zalecki, who had one.

Quad City forced the Cherokee goalie Nate Gay to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

The Jr. Flames were led by Peter Coppola, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Coppola scored short handed 12:15 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Toledo. Quad City was on a disadvantage when Colten Thiel went off the ice for holding. Easton Halbert provided the assist. Quad City additionally got points from DJ Mussey, who also registered one goal and one assist and Halbert, who also finished with one goal and one assist. More assists for Quad City came via Nauris Buskevics, who had one.

Toledo's Gay stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Cherokee registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Jr. Flames incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
