Three Rivers falls apart in second, loses to North Iowa, 6-1

The North Iowa Bulls used a three-goal second period to put away the Three Rivers Vengeance, 6-1.

James Hughes was all over the ice for North Iowa, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Hughes scored the first of his two goals at 11:17 into the first period to make the score 1-0 North Iowa. Timothy Santopoalo assisted on the tally. Hughes' next tally made the score 2-0 North Iowa with 14:46 left in the second period. Santopoalo picked up the assist.

The Bulls made Three Rivers' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 51 shots and forcing 45 saves. Nate Mortland made 21 stops and Tyler Stepke made 24. North Iowa's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Bulls finished with 34 penalty minutes.

Patrick Sivets also scored for North Iowa. More assists for North Iowa came via Tony Paulson, who had one, Richie Marenis, who had two, and Jake Johnson, who had three.

The Vengeance stifled North Iowa's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Three Rivers was held below its usual level of production. The Vengeance average 3.9 goals per game.

Matthew Bartels made 24 saves for the Bulls on 25 shots. North Iowa registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Three Rivers incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
