Granite City takes care of Toledo early, wins 7-1

The Granite City Lumberjacks opened up a four-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 7-1 over the Toledo Cherokee.

Drew Otto had two goals and one assist to lead Granite City. Otto scored the first of his two goals at 11:58 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Granite City. Matt Peterson assisted on the tally. Otto's next tally made the score 3-0 Granite City with 4:36 left in the first period. Eric Miller picked up the assist.

Toledo was stymied by the Lumberjacks netminder Austin Wilson, who stopped 30 shots during the victory. Wilson managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.29 prior to the game.

Granite City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Lumberjacks' goal total was higher than their season average. Granite City averages 4.7 goals per game.

Granite City also got points from Miller, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Mitch Humphries, who also had one goal and one assist. Tim Brown also scored for Granite City. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Aidan Verbeke, who had two and Matt Raiola, Isaac Hoagland, Aaron Azevedo, Mitchell Gwost, Alex Carson, Brett Love, and Blayne Ellson, who contributed one a piece.

The Cherokee's offense operated below they season average. Toledo puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. The Cherokee forced the Lumberjacks goalie Wilson to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Toledo could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Granite City incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Nate Gay took the loss and made five saves before being replaced by Nathan Miller who made 17 saves.
