Cal U beats Southern Connecticut 8-4 as Locante gets hat trick

The Southern Connecticut Owls could not stop Cal U's Justin Locante, who tallied a hat trick in an 8-4 win.

Locante got on the scoresheet 1:30 into the first period. He then added goals at 17:49 into the first and at 3:50 into the second.

Southern Connecticut's power play was ineffective against Cal U's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Cal U put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Owls to score on any of their eight power plays. Cal U's offense rang up 47 shots on Southern Connecticut's net. Cal U surpassed its usual scoring output this season. Cal U averages 5.5 goals per game.

Cal U additionally got points from Kevin Claybaugh, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Mike Marconi, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Cal U also had goals scored by Shane Ierardi, who had one and Thomas Graw, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Cal U were John Miller, Jeremy Pell, Tim Mooney, Craig Eddy, Mitch Fernandez, and Trevor MOrrin, who each chipped in one.

The Owls excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Southern Connecticut was helped by Steven Rosenkrantz, who tallied one goal and two assists. Rosenkrantz scored 13:07 into the third period to make the score 7-3 Cal U. Southern Connecticut also got points from Joe Innamorato, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Blake Biancamano also scored for Southern Connecticut.

Joseph Zinger rejected 25 shots on goal for Cal U. Cal U incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Mike Federico recorded 39 saves for the Owls. Southern Connecticut incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
