Burlington uses shootout to best Milton, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Burlington Cougars defeated the Milton Icehawks in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Burlington came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Cougars trailed 3-1 after a goal by Milton's Shane Bennett at 7:13 in the third period. Burlington knotted things up at 3-3 on a short handed goal by Jeremy Gottzmann at 14:09 in the third period.

The Cougars' penalty kill excelled, as Burlington gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Cougars kept the Icehawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Andre Keire made 36 saves on 40 shots. Burlington was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 42 penalty minutes.

The Cougars were helped by Shane Conacher, who registered one goal. Conacher scored on the power play 17:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Burlington. Burlington had gained a power play chance when Jake Baird was whistled for hooking. Tyler VanKleef assisted on the tally. Ellery O Hara also scored for Burlington. In addition, Burlington received assists from Steven Mueller, Tyler Mayea, Mark Rodgers, and Luke Sinclair, who each chipped in one.

The Cougars were unable to stop Milton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Icehawks eventually piled up 46 shots on goal. Milton could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 44 minutes in penalties during the game.

Milton additionally got points from Brock Bottachio, who also had one goal and one assist and Brad Kobryn, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Milton were Tyler Burns, Spencer Gourlay, and Kane Elliot, who contributed one a piece.

Alex Murray recorded 43 saves for Burlington. The Cougars registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. The Icehawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Justin Devincentis was ejected from the game.
