Rapid City vanquishes Denver in shootout, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Scott Wray scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Rapid City picked up the extra point in a 4-3 (2-1 SO) win over the Denver Cutthroats.

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Denver got a shootout goal from Jamie MacQueen. Rapid City's other shootout goal was scored by Jesse Schultz.

Rapid City saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Rapid City made the score 2-0 on a goal by Wray at 19:26 in the second period. The Cutthroats evened things up at 3-3 on a goal by Brad Smyth at 10:21 in the third period.

Rapid City was led by Wray, who racked up one goal.

Rapid City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and three majors for 27 minutes in penalty time. Rapid City surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Rapid City put 47 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.8 it averages per game.

Rapid City was led by Wray, who tallied one goal. Rapid City additionally got points from Rusty Masters, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Justin Faryna also scored for Rapid City. More assists for Rapid City came via Kyle Peto, Jeff Lee, Jared Brown, Jordan Behler, and Schultz, who contributed one a piece.

Denver was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Cutthroats had been spending in the box. Denver excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Cutthroats relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Michael Trebish, A.J. Gale and Gabe Gauthier took 20 of the team's 38 shots.

Denver also got points from Smyth, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Denver were Joel Chouinard, MacQueen, Phil Tesoriero, and Mikael Bedard, who each chipped in one.

Danny Battochio made 35 saves for Rapid City on 38 shots. Denver's Kent Patterson stopped 43 shots out of the 46 that he faced. The Cutthroats registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
