Wagner's hat trick boosts Wellesley over Norfolk, 8-0

The Norfolk Rebels could not stop the Wellesley Applejacks' Devon Wagner, who tallied a hat trick in an 8-0 win.

Wagner got on the scoresheet 2:44 into the first period. He then added goals at 5:47 into the first and at 19:33 into the third.

Josh Heer frustrated Norfolk's offense all game, and stopped 30 shots en route to a shutout. Heer managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.05 prior to the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:01 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wellesley was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The Applejacks surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. Wellesley made Rebels' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 47 shots and forcing 39 saves. Jason Miller made 30 stops and Jason Pachieko made nine. The Applejacks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Rebels to score on any of their seven power plays. Wellesley outdid its season average for goals scored. The Applejacks average 4.6 goals per game.

Wellesley additionally got points from Tyler Eckert, who also tallied two goals and four assists to lead the team in points. Michael Pollice also scored for Wellesley. More assists for Wellesley came via Coleton Madge, who had two, Troy Williams, who had five, and Taylor Doering, Cody Tapsell, and Brett MacDonald, who contributed one a piece.

Norfolk's offense operated below it season average. The Rebels put an average of 2.1 pucks into the net per game.

Wellesley registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For the Applejacks, Jake Ariss was ejected from the game. Norfolk ended with 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Rebels ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Oatway was ejected from the game.
