Wellesley beats Tavistock 5-4 after comeback scare

The Tavistock Braves tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Wellesley Applejacks held on for a 5-4 victory.

Wellesley took a 5-3 lead during the third period, only to have Tavistock storm back on a Andrew Schacht goal 4:31 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Applejacks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 46 penalty minutes.

Wellesley was led by Corey Way, who registered two goals. Way scored the first of his two goals at 16:25 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Brett MacDonald provided the assist. Way's next tally made the score 4-3 Wellesley with 19:31 left in the third period. MacDonald assisted on the tally. Wellesley also got points from Reid Denstedt, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Wellesley also got a goal from Shawn Fitzpatrick as well. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Derek Lebold, Troy Williams, Cody Tapsell, and Tyler Eckert, who each chipped in one.

The Braves kept the Applejacks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Corey Tuffnail made 46 saves on 50 shots. Tavistock was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

The Braves were led by Derek Cowing, who had one goal and three assists. Cowing scored 12:23 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tavistock. Tavistock additionally got points from Schacht, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jake Mock, who also registered one goal and one assist. Deven Kropf also scored for Tavistock. Other players who recorded assists for Tavistock were Jordan Ritsma, who had one.

Wellesley registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. The Applejacks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luke Rose was ejected from the game. Tim Parker rejected 14 shots on goal for Tavistock. The Braves incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
