Thamesford beats Port Stanley 8-7 after comeback scare

The Port Stanley Sailors tried to dig themselves out of a five-goal hole, but the Thamesford Trojans held on for an 8-7 victory.

Thamesford took a 6-1 lead during the second period, only to have Port Stanley storm back on a Mark Fraser goal 2:59 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Trojans got the win thanks to a great game by Dylan Salter, who had two goals and two assists. Salter scored the first of his two goals at 1:32 into the second period to make the score 4-0 Thamesford. Salter's next tally made the score 8-7 Thamesford with 3:27 left in the third period. Kyle Walker provided the assist.

Thamesford forced the Sailors goalie Ricky Corkum to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. The Trojans bested their season scoring average. Thamesford averages 5.0 goals per game. The Trojans were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

Thamesford also got points from Andrew McLennan, who also registered one goal and one assist. Thamesford also got a goal from Judson Couture as well. More assists for Thamesford came via James Toye, who had two and Ben Kirwin, Dylan Black, and Brandyn Di Domenico, who contributed one a piece.

Port Stanley's offense rang up 39 shots on Thamesford's net. The Sailors found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Port Stanley has scored at the pace of 4.3 goals per game during the current campaign. The Sailors' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Port Stanley finished with 36 penalty minutes.

The Sailors were led by Josh Tremblay, who tallied three goals and two assists. Port Stanley additionally got points from Dan Gordon, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Fraser, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Mark Brisson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Findley Brandon, who also tallied one goal and one assist.

James Champagne made 32 saves for the Trojans on 39 shots. Thamesford incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Port Stanley's Corkum stopped 32 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Sailors registered three goals on six power play opportunities. Port Stanley ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tanner Turley was ejected from the game.
