Exeter rips Port Stanley, 5-2

The Exeter Hawks had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-2 win over the Port Stanley Sailors.

Exeter's penalty kill excelled, as the Hawks gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:33 into the second period. Seven fighting penalties were dished out along with nine game misconducts.

Exeter was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and five majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. The Hawks had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. Exeter forced Sailors' goaltenders to work in net, taking 34 shots and forcing 29 saves. Brandon Garner made 16 stops and Ricky Corkum made 13.

The Hawks were led by Dylan Bedard, who grabbed two goals and two assists. Bedard scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Exeter. Exeter earned a power play opportunity when Dan Gordon was put in the box for slashing. Bedard's next tally on the power play made the score 5-2 Exeter with 10:10 left in the third period. Trevor Thornton picked up the assist. Exeter also had goals scored by Conner Preston, who had one and Kalvin Thornton, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Exeter were Mitch Wild, who had one.

Port Stanley forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and four majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The Sailors surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game. Port Stanley made the Hawks' netminders to work between the pipes, finishing with 31 shots and forcing 29 saves. Bryan Paolotto made 18 stops and Colton James made 11. The Sailors were held below their usual level of production. Port Stanley puts an average of 4.2 pucks into the net per game.

The Sailors were helped by Josh Tremblay, who racked up one goal. Tremblay scored on the power play 13:37 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Exeter. A spearing penalty on Chiristopher Pfaff had put Port Stanley on the power play. Luke McGuire assisted on the tally. Port Stanley also got a goal from Tom Yurek as well. More assists for Port Stanley came via Andrew Yurek and Tyler Beaulieu, who each chipped in one.

Exeter registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Paolotto, Thornton, Wild, Pfaff, Matthew McLellan, Taylor Moir, and Dan Lawson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. For the Sailors, Garner, Tanner Turley, Ryan McDonnell, McGuire, and Cody Taggert were ejected from the contest.
