Doering lifts Wellesley over Norfolk, 7-4

Behind a great game by Taylor Doering, who had two goals, the Wellesley Applejacks defeated the Norfolk Rebels, 7-4.

Doering found the back of the net on the power play 15:23 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wellesley and again while 8:18 into the second to make the score 2-1 Wellesley.

Wellesley's penalty kill excelled, as the Applejacks gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Wellesley stifled Norfolk's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Applejacks kept the Rebels' goalie busy throughout the game, and Alex Tipping made 40 saves on 47 shots. Wellesley's goal total was higher than its season average. The Applejacks have scored at the pace of 4.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Wellesley also got points from Corey Way, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Wellesley included Steve Tait, who had two and Reid Denstedt and Luke Rose, who scored one goal each. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Troy Williams, who had three, Shawn Fitzpatrick and Devon Wagner, who each chipped in one, and Jake Steenson and Josh Herd, who contributed two a piece.

Norfolk forced Wellesley goalie Trevor Olender to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

The Rebels were helped by Joshua Slegers, who finished with one goal. Slegers scored 2:08 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Brayden Dickinson provided the assist. Norfolk also got a goal from Nate Parker as well. Other players who recorded assists for Norfolk were Philip Barbon, Clayton Charot, Tyler Jones, Kurtis Pettitt, Steve Parker, Ryan Oatway, and Dylan Heaslip, who each chipped in one.

Olender recorded 33 saves for the Applejacks. Wellesley incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Norfolk incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
