Exeter uses shootout to best Mt.Brydges, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Exeter Hawks defeated the Mt.Brydges Bulldogs in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:17 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Exeter forced Mt.Brydges goalie Eric Steinman to work between the pipes, taking 56 shots. The Hawks outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Exeter averages 3.5 goals per contest. The Hawks found themselves short handed often, totaling 29 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays.

Exeter was led by Wesley McGovern, who racked up two goals. McGovern scored the first of his two goals at 12:52 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Exeter. Taylor Moir assisted on the tally. McGovern's next tally made the score 4-2 Exeter with 6:33 left in the second period. Matthew McLellan picked up the assist. Exeter additionally got points from Kalvin Thornton, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Moir, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Cam Jude also scored for Exeter. Other players who recorded assists for Exeter were Brodie Balcom and Mitch Wild, who contributed one a piece.

The Bulldogs' offense rang up 50 shots on the Hawks' net.

Mt.Brydges was helped by Mike Frizzell, who had two goals and one assist. Frizzell scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:27 into the third period to make the score 4-4. The Bulldogs had gotten the advantage when Exeter's Wild was sent off for elbowing. Tony Lindner assisted on the tally. Frizzell's next tally on the power play made the score 5-5 with 11:06 left in the third period. Hayden Trbizan picked up the assist. Mt.Brydges also got points from Sean Candler, who also tallied two goals and one assist and Spencer Wilson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Mt.Brydges came via Grant Johns, who had two and Connor Dunn and Robert McTaggart, who each chipped in one.

Bryan Paolotto made 45 saves for the Hawks on 50 shots. Exeter registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Consitt was ejected from the game. Steinman rejected 50 shots on goal for Mt.Brydges. The Bulldogs ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For Mt.Brydges, Ryan Battersby was ejected from the game.
