Port Stanley hangs on, beats Mt.Brydges 5-3

Tyson Corkum scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Port Stanley Sailors held off the challenges of the Mt.Brydges Bulldogs in a tough 5-3 win.

Port Stanley took over the lead for good with a goal by Corkum at 2:01 in the first period.

Mt.Brydges' power play was ineffective against the Sailors' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Port Stanley was paced by Tyler Beaulieu, who registered one goal and one assist. Beaulieu scored 11:08 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Port Stanley. Dan Gordon provided the assist.

The the Sailors penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 13 minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 32.0 minutes per game Port Stanley had been spending in the box. The Bulldogs were unable to stop the Sailors from sending pucks towards the net, and Port Stanley eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Port Stanley additionally got points from Josh Tremblay, who also had one goal and one assist. Drew Eaton also scored for Port Stanley. Other players who recorded assists for Port Stanley were Andrew Yurek, who had two and Ryan McDonnell and Luke McGuire, who each chipped in one.

Mt.Brydges' offense rang up 41 shots on the Sailors' net.

The Bulldogs were helped by Sean Candler, who grabbed one goal. Candler scored 12:16 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Port Stanley. Brady Doxtator (APM) assisted on the tally. Mt.Brydges also got a goal from Robert McTaggart as well. In addition, Mt.Brydges received assists from Ryan Battersby, who had two and Hayden Trbizan, Mike Frizzell, and Robert Mapes, who contributed one a piece.

Brandon Garner made 38 saves for Port Stanley on 41 shots. The Sailors registered one goal on two power play opportunities. For Port Stanley, Cody Taggert was ejected from the game. Eric Steinman rejected 32 shots on goal for Mt.Brydges. The Bulldogs incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
