Wellesley beats Burford 7-6 after comeback scare

The Wellesley Applejacks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Burford Bulldogs on the way to a 7-6 win.

Wellesley made the score 6-1 on a goal by Tyler Eckert at 15:23 in the second period, and Burford got as close as 7-6 when Tyler MacLaughlin scored 19:33 into the third period.

The Applejacks forced the Bulldogs' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 32 shots and forcing 25 saves. Don Davis made 17 stops and Ben Beechey made eight. Wellesley surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Applejacks average 3.5 goals per contest.

Wellesley was led by Devon Wagner, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Wagner scored the first of his two goals short handed at 17:25 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Wellesley. A holding call on Cody Tapsell put the Applejacks on the penalty kill. Mark Detzler assisted on the tally. Wagner's next tally short handed made the score 5-1 Wellesley with 6:09 left in the second period. Steve Tait picked up the assist. Wellesley also got points from Tait, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Connor McLeod, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Eckert, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Corey Way also scored for Wellesley. Other players who recorded assists for Wellesley were Troy Williams, who had two and Reid Denstedt, Michael Pollice, Jake Steenson, and Josh Herd, who each chipped in one.

Burford's offense rang up 36 shots on Wellesley's net.

The Bulldogs were led by Kyle Chaney, who racked up one goal and two assists. Chaney scored on the power play 19:17 into the third period to make the score 7-5 Wellesley. A slashing penalty on Coleton Madge had put Burford on the power play. Pat Bates provided the assist. Burford additionally got points from Tyler Vandenbussche, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Burford also got a goal from Adam Harris as well. More assists for Burford came via Eric Lucente, who had two and JJ Haroland, Nathan Boyle, Matt Cartmel, and Michael Thomlison, who contributed one a piece.

The Applejacks' Josh Heer stopped 30 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Wellesley incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The Bulldogs incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
