Exeter erases deficit to stun Port Stanley, 5-4

Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Exeter Hawks battled back to claim a 5-4 victory over the Port Stanley Sailors.

Exeter never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Hawks fell behind 3-1 after a goal by Port Stanley's Tyler Beaulieu at 10:03 in the second period. Exeter tied things up at 4-4 on a short handed goal by Matthew McLellan at 16:33 in the third period. The Hawks scored the game winner at 19:40 in the third period on a goal by McLellan.

Exeter forced the Sailors goalie Brandon Garner to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots.

The Hawks were led by Kalvin Thornton, who registered three goals and one assist. Exeter additionally got points from Brodie Balcom, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Exeter came via Josh DenOtter and Wesley McGovern, who each chipped in one and Mitch Wild and Cam Jude, who contributed two a piece.

Port Stanley's offense rang up 44 shots on Exeter's net. The Sailors were held back by their power play unit, which tallied one goal on nine chances.

Tanner Turley also scored for Port Stanley. In addition, Port Stanley received assists from Graham Silcox, Luke McGuire, and Taylor Schram, who each chipped in one and Andrew Yurek and Josh Tremblay, who contributed two a piece.

Paul Orlando made 40 saves for the Hawks on 44 shots. Exeter totaled 27 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Team's Alex Deluce and Dylan Bedard were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Port Stanley's Garner stopped 41 shots out of the 46 that he faced. The Sailors ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. Port Stanley ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan McDonnell was ejected from the game.
