Port Stanley uses shootout to best Thamesford, 7-6 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Port Stanley Sailors defeated the Thamesford Trojans in a shootout 7-6 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. Thamesford's shootout goal was scored by Kyle Walker. Port Stanley's other shootout goal was scored by Tyler Beaulieu.

The Sailors came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Port Stanley fell behind 3-0 after a goal by the Trojans' Beau Diloreto at 4:33 in the second period. The Sailors knotted things up at 6-6 on a power play goal by Andrew McLennan at 14:21 in the third period.

Thamesford's 11 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Trojans let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

Port Stanley's offense rang up 47 shots on Thamesford's net. The Sailors bested their season scoring average. Port Stanley has scored at the pace of 4.7 goals per game during the current campaign. The Sailors' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Port Stanley finished with 64 penalty minutes.

The Sailors were led by Drew Eaton, who tallied two goals. Eaton scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:59 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Port Stanley. Port Stanley had taken the advantage when the Trojans' John Mattews got sent off for hooking. Cody Taggert picked up the assist. Eaton's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Port Stanley with 13:00 left in the third period. Beaulieu assisted on the tally. Port Stanley additionally got points from Beaulieu, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Dan Gordon also scored for Port Stanley. Other players who recorded assists for Port Stanley were Graham Silcox, who had two and Tanner Turley, Drew Moore, and Trevor Smith, who contributed one a piece.

The Sailors were unable to stop Thamesford from sending pucks towards the net, and the Trojans eventually piled up 54 shots on goal. Thamesford surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Trojans average 3.6 goals per game. Team could not crack Port Stanley's penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having 17 opportunities to play with the man advantage. Thamesford found itself short handed often, totaling 42 penalty minutes and allowing 10 power plays.

The Trojans were helped by Walker, who racked up two goals and one assist. Walker scored the first of his two goals at 49 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-2 Thamesford. Adam Levine provided the assist. Walker's next tally made the score 6-5 Port Stanley with 6:28 left in the third period. McLennan assisted on the tally. Thamesford also got points from James Toye, who also racked up one goal and one assist, McLennan, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Justin Cooper, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Thamesford came via Judson Couture and Dylan Salter, who each chipped in one.

Brandon Garner made 48 saves for the Sailors on 54 shots. James Champagne rejected 40 shots on goal for Thamesford. The Trojans ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Couture was ejected from the game.
