Mutton's hat trick boosts Ayr over Tavistock, 8-5

Alex Mutton netted a hat trick to lead the Ayr Centennials over the Tavistock Braves, 8-5.

Mutton's first goal came 10:14 into the first period. He then added goals at 13:06 into the first and at 11:27 into the third.

Ayr's penalty kill excelled, as the Centennials gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:29 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Ayr was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. The Centennials surpassed its season average of 34.0 penalty minutes per game. Ayr forced Braves' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 38 shots and forcing 30 saves. Taylor VanBockel made 22 stops and Tim Porter made eight. The Centennials outdid their season average for goals scored. Ayr has scored at the pace of 5.3 goals per game during the current campaign. The Centennials' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Ayr also got points from Declan Kaster, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Ayr included Zack Taylor, who had two and Spencer Sweazy and Nathan Redford, who scored one goal each. In addition, Ayr received assists from Justin Plant, Brandon Christopher, and Syd Saunders, who contributed one a piece.

Tavistock forced Ayr goalie Jordan Witt to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

The Braves were led by Devon Kropf, who had two goals and one assist. Kropf scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:35 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tavistock. A tripping penalty on Alex Richard had put Tavistock on the power play. Jordan Ritsma provided the assist. Kropf's next tally on the power play made the score 7-5 Ayr with 1:08 left in the second period. Tavistock additionally got points from Charlie Malson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Ritsma, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Mack Gingerich also scored for Tavistock. More assists for Tavistock came via Josh Zehr, who had one.

Jordan Witt made 33 saves for the Centennials on 38 shots. Ayr registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Centennials ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Saunders was ejected from the game. The Braves ended with 31 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For Tavistock, Andrew Schacht and VanBockel were ejected from the contest.
