Blenheim beats Essex 6-4 after comeback scare

The Essex 73s tried their best to erase a four-goal deficit, but the Blenheim Blades would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-4.

A goal by Cam Aitken put Blenheim up 6-2 in the second period, but Essex pulled to within two on Marco Canzoneri's tally 9:12 into the third period.

Tyler Clarke had two goals and two assists to lead the Blades. Clarke scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:35 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Blenheim had gained a power play chance when Jordan Brohman was whistled for cross checking. Taylor Phillips assisted on the tally. Clarke's next tally on the power play made the score 5-1 Blenheim with 18:41 left in the second period. Justin Rossignol provided the assist.

The Blades bested their season scoring average. Blenheim averages 3.0 goals per game. The Blades could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game.

Blenheim additionally got points from Jake ONeil, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Phillips, who also registered one goal and two assists. Ryan Frizzell also scored for Blenheim. In addition, Blenheim received assists from Bowe Shepley, John McKillop, Jarrod Oliphant, and Matt Speed, who contributed one a piece.

The 73s' offense rang up 50 shots on Blenheim's net. Essex's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The 73s are averaging 2.3 goals against for the season. Essex struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 48 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

The 73s were led by Alex Garon, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Garon scored 1:52 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Essex. Corey Beaulieu picked up the assist. Essex also got a goal from Jordan Ryan as well. Other players who recorded assists for Essex were Blaise Baillargeon, Tyler Raymont, Colin Moore, and Kasey Basile, who each chipped in one.

Justin Pratt made 46 saves for the Blades on 50 shots. Essex took out Arren Romeril after he had made two saves and installed Trevor Wheaton in goal, where he finished with 12 saves and the loss. The 73s registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Essex ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Canzoneri was ejected from the game.
