Mooretown beats Wallaceburg 7-6 after comeback scare

The Wallaceburg Lakers tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Mooretown Flags held on for a 7-6 victory.

Mooretown made the score 7-5 on a goal by Riley Roberts at 14:55 in the third period, and Wallaceburg got as close as 7-6 when Lucais Meyskens scored 15:14 into the third period.

Roberts was all over the ice for the Flags, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Roberts scored the first of his two goals at 5:46 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Mooretown. Travis Mullen assisted on the tally. Roberts' next tally made the score Mooretown with 5:05 left in the third period. Caden Fleming picked up the assist.

Mooretown kept the Lakers' goalie busy throughout the game, and Joel Sowinski made 43 saves on 50 shots. The Flags bested their season scoring average. Mooretown averages 3.6 goals per game. The Flags struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Wallaceburg to score three power play goals on five chances.

Mooretown additionally got points from Fleming, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Jeff Schroeter, who also registered two goals and two assists to lead the team in points. Calab Harse also scored for Mooretown. Other players who recorded assists for Mooretown were Jordan Orth and Mike Burns, who contributed one a piece.

The Lakers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Mooretown was unable to stop Wallaceburg from sending pucks towards the net, and the Lakers eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Wallaceburg outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Lakers average 3.1 goals per contest.

Wallaceburg was helped by Justin Whitson, who finished with two goals. Whitson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:12 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Lakers had gained a power play chance when Schroeter was whistled for cross checking. Scott Lubbers assisted on the tally. Whitson's next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 16:22 left in the second period. Wallaceburg had gotten the advantage when the Flags' Mullen was sent off for slashing. Wallaceburg also got points from Meyskens, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Lubbers, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Wallaceburg also got a goal from Bobby Domin as well. More assists for Wallaceburg came via Brennan Rainey and Joe Daly, who each chipped in two.

Braden Palocz recorded 26 saves for Mooretown. The Flags incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Lakers incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
