Kingsville beats Dresden 5-3 after comeback scare

The Kingsville Comets survived a determined comeback attempt by the Dresden Kings on the way to a 5-3 win.

Kingsville took a 4-0 lead during the second period, only to have Dresden storm back on a Josh Beatty goal 12:14 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Comets pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 40 penalty minutes.

Kingsville's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Dresden power plays. The Comets found themselves stymied offensively, and got off a mere 14 shots against the Kings' defense. Kingsville got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

The Comets were helped by Andy Britton, who racked up one goal. Britton scored on the power play 10:11 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Kingsville. Kingsville had gotten the advantage when Dresden's Dylan Mertz was sent off for roughing. Frank Desjardin picked up the assist. Kingsville additionally got points from Connor Rennie, who also had one goal and one assist and Mark Fratarcangeli, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Kingsville also got a goal from Adam Minovski as well. More assists for Kingsville came via Tyler Kirby, who had two and Ryan Jones, Robert Jardine, and Zack Brown, who contributed one a piece.

The Kings were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 42 penalty minutes.

Dresden was helped by Cody McPhail, who grabbed one goal. McPhail scored 18:56 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Kingsville. Mike Myers assisted on the tally. Derek VanEvery also scored for Dresden. In addition, Dresden received assists from Macks Holmes, who had one.

Marcus Rees rejected 14 shots on goal for the Comets. Kingsville registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Comets, Justin Parker was ejected from the game. The Kings' Brent Paxton stopped nine shots out of the 14 that he faced.
