Wheatley falls to Dresden in overtime, 7-6 (OT)

The Dresden Kings pulled out a 7-6 (OT) overtime victory over the Wheatley Sharks on a clutch goal by Dylan Mertz.

Dresden overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Kings trailed 6-3 after a goal by Wheatley's Kyle Quick at 19:43 in the second period. Dresden tied things up at 6-6 on a goal by Josh Beatty at 11:38 in the third period.

With three goals and two assists between them, Beatty and Cody McPhail teamed up to power the Kings' offense. Beatty registered two goals and McPhail also added one goal and two assists.

Dresden's offense rang up 31 shots on the Sharks' net. The Kings surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Dresden averages 3.2 goals per contest. The Kings was effective with a man advantage, and put in five goals while on the power play.

Dresden additionally got points from Jeff Vanrabaeys, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Mertz, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and McPhail, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Dresden also got a goal from Macks Holmes as well. Other players who recorded assists for Dresden were Wade Esselman, who had two and Josh Clements, John Montgomery, Jesse Allen, Alex Ritchie, and Derek Daly, who each chipped in one.

Wheatley made Kings' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 42 shots and forcing 36 saves. Kaylobe Derynck made nine stops and Brent Paxton made 27. The Sharks bested their season scoring average. Wheatley has scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign.

Wheatley also got points from Mike Reid, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Austin Fontaine, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Luke Gagnon, who also registered one goal and one assist. Riley Babkirk also scored for Wheatley. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Zach Wilson and Kurtis Ouellette, who contributed one a piece and Brett Babkirk and Sebastian Kanally, who each chipped in two.

Dresden incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Sharks' Nick Keeler stopped 24 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Wheatley incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
