Essex shrugs off penalties, upends Mooretown, 6-2

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Essex 73s were able to defeat the Mooretown Flags, 6-2.

Essex was led by Matthew Hebert, who grabbed one goal. Hebert scored 10:19 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Essex. Dylan Solecki provided the assist.

The the 73s penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Essex surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. The 73s stifled Mooretown's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Flags were unable to stop Essex from sending pucks towards the net, and the 73s eventually piled up 44 shots on goal. The defensemen of Essex were also effective in Mooretown's zone, and came away with two goals.

Essex also got points from Kevin Boggs, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Aaron Thibert, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jordan Brohman also scored for Essex. In addition, Essex received assists from Curtis Prymack, who had two and Corey Beaulieu, Jordan Ryan, Zack Miletic, and Mac Laforest, who each chipped in one.

The Flags racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Mooretown had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Flags were helped by Riley Roberts, who tallied one goal. Roberts scored 12:59 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mooretown. Andrew Sokol picked up the assist. Mooretown also got a goal from Caden Fleming as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mooretown were Ryan Jennings, Alec Rutherford, and McGregor Haddon, who contributed one a piece.

The 73s' Trevor Wheaton stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Essex registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. The 73s ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Colin DeLaet was ejected from the game. Brandon Johnson made 38 saves for Mooretown on 44 shots. The Flags registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. For Mooretown, Rutherford was ejected from the game.
