Mooretown shrugs off penalties, upends Wheatley, 6-3

The Mooretown Flags capitalized on the deft passing of Travis Mullen, who garnered three assists to take down the Wheatley Sharks, 6-3.

Mullen quarterbacked Mooretown's offense to perfection and bagged three assists in the Flags' win over Wheatley.

In a losing effort, the Sharks were led by Kyle Quick, who had two goals and one assist. Quick scored the first of his two goals at 3:49 into the third period to make the score 5-2 Mooretown. Brian Johnson assisted on the tally. Quick's next tally made the score 5-3 Mooretown with 14:21 left in the third period. Dylan Impens picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:23 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Mooretown penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. The Flags surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. Mooretown put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wheatley to score on any of its eight power plays. The Flags surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Mooretown has scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Mooretown additionally got points from Jeff Schroeter, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Mooretown included Jordan Orth, who had two and Alec Rutherford, Caden Fleming, and Andrew Sokol, who scored one goal each. In addition, Mooretown received assists from Dan Hachey, McGregor Haddon, Cody Hardman, Calab Harse, and Dan Lumley, who contributed one a piece.

Jon Woelk also scored for Wheatley. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Lucas Raffoul, who had one.

Braden Palocz made 27 saves for the Flags on 30 shots. Mooretown registered two goals on two power play opportunities. For the Flags, Jordan McBeath, Mike Burns, and Sokol were ejected from the contest. Robbie Vrabel rejected 20 shots on goal for the Sharks. Wheatley ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with two minors and three majors. Team's Kevin Sawatzky, Johnson, and Raffoul were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
