Dresden wins tough contest against Wheatley, 6-4

The Dresden Kings gutted out a close 6-4 win against the Wheatley Sharks.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Dylan Mertz's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Macks Holmes was all over the ice for Dresden, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Holmes scored the first of his two goals at 2:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Dresden. Alex Ritchie provided the assist. Holmes' next tally made the score 5-3 Dresden with 19:37 left in the third period. Taylor Sisson picked up the assist.

Wheatley was unable to stop the Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Dresden eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. The Kings surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Dresden has scored at the pace of 3.2 goals per game during the current campaign.

Dresden also got points from Mertz, who also finished with two goals and two assists to lead the team in points. Dresden also got a goal from Jeff Vanrabaeys as well. In addition, Dresden received assists from Alex Schmidt, who had two and Josh Clements, Cody McPhail, and Jesse Allen, who contributed one a piece.

The Sharks forced the Kings goalie Brent Paxton to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. Wheatley was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 26 penalty minutes.

The Sharks were led by Jon Woelk, who racked up one goal and one assist. Woelk scored 2:06 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Wheatley. Brendon Anger provided the assist. Wheatley additionally got points from Brian Johnson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Craig Adamson also scored for Wheatley. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Kurtis Ouellette, Kyle Quick, Austin Fontaine, and Eric Rivard, who each chipped in one.

Brent Paxton made 32 saves for Dresden on 36 shots. The Kings incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Marc Tremblay rejected 30 shots on goal for Wheatley. The Sharks registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
