Wheatley hangs on, beats Alvinston 2-1

Eric Rivard scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Wheatley Sharks held off the challenges of the Alvinston Flyers in a tough 2-1 win.

Wheatley took over the lead for good with a goal by Rivard at 17:04 in the first period. Dylan Impens assisted on the tally.

Alvinston was stymied by the Sharks netminder Marc Tremblay, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Tremblay certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.18 entering the contest.

The Flyers' power play was ineffective against Wheatley's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Alvinston was unable to stop the Sharks from sending pucks towards the net, and Wheatley eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Sharks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

Wheatley was helped by Luke Gagnon, who finished with one goal. Gagnon scored short handed 1:05 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Wheatley. Lucas Raffoul provided the assist. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Brian Johnson, who had one.

The Flyers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Alvinston was held below its usual level of production. The Flyers average 3.7 goals per game. Alvinston forced the Sharks goalie Tremblay to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

The Flyers were led by Tyler Kettler, who scored the team's only goal. Kettler scored on the power play 19:26 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Wheatley. A boarding penalty on Kyle Quick had put Alvinston on the power play. Joe Archer picked up the assist.

Wheatley ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Raffoul was ejected from the game. Brad Jacklin made 29 saves for the Flyers on 31 shots. Alvinston incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
