Wheatley uses shootout to best Mooretown, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wheatley Sharks defeated the Mooretown Flags in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Wheatley saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Sharks made the score 4-2 on a goal by Dan Matoski at 1:27 in the third period. Mooretown evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Riley Roberts at 13:28 in the third period.

Wheatley's penalty kill excelled, as the Sharks gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

Wheatley's offense rang up 43 shots on the Flags' net.

The Sharks were helped by Mitchell Prudence, who had one goal. Prudence scored 2:26 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Stephen Croley assisted on the tally. Wheatley also got points from Brett Bowman, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Kyle Quick also scored for Wheatley. More assists for Wheatley came via Dylan Impens, who had one and Brendon Anger, who had two.

Mooretown stifled Wheatley's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Flags kept the Sharks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Marc Tremblay made 30 saves on 34 shots.

Mooretown was led by Mike Burns, who tallied one goal and two assists. Burns scored on the power play 11:42 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Wheatley. The Flags had gotten the advantage when Wheatley's Max Turner was sent off for tripping. Jeff Schroeter provided the assist. Mooretown additionally got points from Schroeter, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Mooretown also got a goal from McGregor Haddon as well. In addition, Mooretown received assists from Jordan McBeath, Travis Mullen, and Dan Lumley, who contributed one a piece.

The Sharks incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Mooretown's Braden Palocz stopped 38 shots out of the 42 that he faced. The Flags incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
