Belle River beats Mooretown 4-2 after comeback scare

The Belle River Canadiens survived a determined comeback attempt by the Mooretown Flags on the way to a 4-2 win.

A goal by Branden Larocque put Belle River up 4-1 in the third period, but Mooretown pulled to within two on Riley Roberts' tally 9:38 into the third period.

The Canadiens pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 28 penalty minutes.

Belle River put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Flags to score on any of their nine power plays. The Canadiens kept Mooretown's goalie busy throughout the game, and Brandon Johnson made 39 saves on 43 shots. Belle River's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

The Canadiens were helped by Richard Dunning, who had one goal. Dunning scored 6:00 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Belle River. Larocque assisted on the tally. Belle River also got points from Larocque, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Weston Gaul, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Belle River also got a goal from Tyler Turner as well. In addition, Belle River received assists from Matthew Couloufis, Derek Haskell, Donnovan Plummer, and Chris DiNatale, who each chipped in one.

The Flags' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Belle River power plays.

Mooretown was helped by Matt Brandon, who tallied one goal. Brandon scored 15:48 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Belle River. Mike Burns picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Mooretown were Jordan Orth, who had one.

Brandon Cowell recorded 25 saves for Belle River. The Flags incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
