Gray nets hat trick, leads Potomac Patriots to 7-5 win over Hampton Roads Whalers

Nicholas Gray lifted Potomac Patriots to a 7-5 victory with a hat trick against Hampton Roads Whalers.

Gray notched his first tally 3:40 into the first period. He then added goals at 3:58 into the second and at 16:53 into the third.

Potomac Patriots led by four goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Potomac Patriots' Cameron Smith's scored at 16:37 in the second period to put Potomac Patriots up 6-2.

Potomac Patriots' penalty kill excelled, as Potomac Patriots gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

Potomac Patriots made Hampton Roads Whalers' goaltenders to work in net, racking up 32 shots and forcing 25 saves. Brett Kilar made 13 stops and Blake Scott made 12. Potomac Patriots bested its season scoring average. Potomac Patriots has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. Potomac Patriots could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game.

Potomac Patriots also got points from Smith, who also registered two goals and one assist and Matthew Wipper, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Potomac Patriots also got a goal from Carter Schultz as well. In addition, Potomac Patriots received assists from Nathan Marks, who had one and Alexander Grose and Evan Sterling, who contributed two a piece.

Hampton Roads Whalers' offense rang up 66 shots on Potomac Patriots' net.

Hampton Roads Whalers was led by Matthew Zendejas, who registered two goals. Zendejas scored the first of his two goals at 15:15 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Clayton Kanemitsu provided the assist. Zendejas' next tally made the score 3-2 Potomac Patriots with 16:28 left in the second period. Cameron Snyder also scored for Hampton Roads Whalers. Other players who recorded assists for Hampton Roads Whalers were Devin DesNoyers, who had two and Dylan Woods, Cody Pessig, Alexander Brissette, and Allen McCloud, who each chipped in one.

Dustyn Moyer rejected 61 shots on goal for Potomac Patriots. Potomac Patriots registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Hampton Roads Whalers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
