Clarington beats Lakefield 3-2 after comeback scare

The Lakefield Chiefs tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Clarington Eagles held on for a 3-2 victory.

Clarington made the score 3-1 on a goal by Blane Gaudon at 7:57 in the third period, and Lakefield got as close as 3-2 when Ryan Anderson scored 8:56 into the third period.

The Chiefs' power play was ineffective against the Eagles' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Clarington kept Lakefield's goalie busy throughout the game, and Dustin Cook made 28 saves on 31 shots. The Eagles had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

Clarington additionally got points from Cody Kean, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Greg St. James also scored for Clarington. Other players who recorded assists for Clarington were Carter Vahey and Brad Down, who each chipped in one.

The Chiefs forced Clarington's netminders to work all game long, firing 39 shots and forcing 37 saves. Keaton Dillon made 37 stops and Nick Keleher made zero.

Lakefield was led by Connor Blair, who tallied one goal and one assist. Blair scored 9:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Taylor Reece provided the assist. More assists for Lakefield came via Erik Gifford, who had two.

The Eagles incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Chiefs incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
