Machalski leads Cambridge to shutout victory over Elmira

Lucas Machalski made 49 saves to complete the shutout and led the Cambridge Winter Hawks to a 9-0 win against the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Todd Bannermon had two goals and two assists to lead Cambridge. Bannermon scored the first of his two goals short handed at 12:00 into the second period to make the score 5-0 Cambridge. A roughing after whistle call on Trevor Hache put the Winter Hawks on the penalty kill. Cody Gratton picked up the assist. Bannermon's next tally short handed made the score 9-0 Cambridge with 9:05 left in the third period. Cambridge had gained a power play chance when Zac Coulter was whistled for cross checking. Dylan Decker provided the assist.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Cambridge's defense was surprisingly good. The Winter Hawks allow 2.6 goals per game. Cambridge forced Elmira goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to work between the pipes, taking 48 shots. The Winter Hawks outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Cambridge averages 3.8 goals per contest. The Winter Hawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 56 minutes in penalties during the game.

Cambridge additionally got points from Gratton, who also grabbed two goals and three assists to lead the team in points and Chris Taylor, who also registered two goals and one assist. Christian Barnard also scored for Cambridge. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Brandon Plourde, who had two and Hudson Michaelis, Mitch Facey, Tyler Snyder, Maxime Lamontagne, Andrew Coupland, and Alex Bottigoni, who each chipped in one.

The Sugar Kings could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Elmira averages 3.5 goals per game. The Sugar Kings' offense rang up 49 shots on Cambridge's net. Elmira struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 102 penalty minutes for 17 opposing power plays.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 39 saves for the Sugar Kings on 48 shots. For Elmira, Cash Seraphim was ejected from the game.
