Cambridge beats Elmira 3-2 after comeback scare

The Elmira Sugar Kings tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Cambridge Winter Hawks held on for a 3-2 victory.

Cambridge took a 3-1 lead during the second period, only to have Elmira storm back on a Zac Coulter goal 3:38 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Winter Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 36 penalty minutes.

Cambridge forced the Sugar Kings' goalies to work between the pipes, racking up 54 shots and forcing 51 saves. Mackenzie Blackwood made 51 stops and Hayden Neuman made zero.

The Winter Hawks were led by Trevor Hache, who tallied one goal and one assist. Hache scored short handed 9:26 into the second period to make the score Cambridge. Cambridge found itself down a man on Kyle Locke's cross checking. Mitch Facey provided the assist. Cambridge also got a goal from Hudson Michaelis as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Aaron Duggan and Cameron Pentsa, who each chipped in one.

Elmira's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Cambridge power plays. The Winter Hawks were unable to stop the Sugar Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Elmira eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

The Sugar Kings were led by Mitch Wright, who registered one goal and one assist. Wright scored 2:53 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. Craig Johnson picked up the assist. In addition, Elmira received assists from Pat McKelvie(APJ) and Jake Weidner, who contributed one a piece.

Lucas Machalski rejected 43 shots on goal for Cambridge. Elmira incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
