Leamington vanquishes St. Thomas in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Leamington Flyers defeated the St. Thomas Stars in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. St. Thomas' shootout goal was scored by Martin Kudla. In addition to the clincher, Leamington got a shootout goal from Kyle Shaw.

The Flyers' penalty kill excelled, as Leamington gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Stars were unable to stop the Flyers from sending pucks towards the net, and Leamington eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.

The Flyers were helped by Eric Leardi, who tallied one goal. Leardi scored on the power play 14:24 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Leamington. A slashing penalty on Braden Hellems had put Leamington on the power play. Jared Dennis picked up the assist. Leamington also got a goal from Nathan Opblinger as well. In addition, Leamington received assists from Tony Spidalieri, who had one and Alex Seguin, who had two.

St. Thomas was led by Drew Collinson, who registered one goal and one assist. Collinson scored on the power play 13:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Thomas. The Stars had taken the advantage when the Flyers' J.P. Grineau got sent off for high sticking. Kudla provided the assist. Scott Mitchell also scored for St. Thomas. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Mike Iacocca, who had one.

Matt Mancina made 21 saves for Leamington on 23 shots. The Flyers totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Leamington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brett Langlois was ejected from the game. St. Thomas' Donald Edwards stopped 41 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Stars incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. For St. Thomas, Dean Pawlaczky was ejected from the game.
