Niagara Falls beats St. Catharines 4-2 after comeback scare

The Niagara Falls Canucks survived a determined comeback attempt by the St. Catharines Falcons on the way to a 4-2 win.

Niagara Falls took a 4-1 lead during the third period, only to have St. Catharines storm back on a Jordan Bailey goal 15:01 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:22 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with four game misconducts.

The Canucks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and two majors for 70 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 31.0 minutes per game Niagara Falls had been spending in the box.

The Canucks were helped by Darren Young, who registered one goal. Young scored 11:01 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls also got a goal from Tory McLean as well. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from Brad Kri, who had two and Marcus Michalski and Vito Scaringi, who each chipped in one.

The the Falcons penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 13 minors and three majors for 61 minutes in penalty time. St. Catharines had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Falcons did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. St. Catharines puts an average of 6.1 pucks into the net per game. The Falcons kept Niagara Falls' goalie busy throughout the game, and Hunter Johnson made 36 saves on 38 shots.

Mitch Bennett also scored for St. Catharines. More assists for St. Catharines came via Luke Karaim, who had two and Ben Walsh and Mitch Bursey, who contributed one a piece.

The Canucks registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Cam Stewart and Billy Saxton were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Stormer Santana recorded 23 saves for St. Catharines. The Falcons registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For St. Catharines, Walsh, Bennett, and Bursey were ejected from the contest.
