Leamington beats London 2-1 after comeback scare

The Leamington Flyers survived a determined comeback attempt by the London Nationals on the way to a 2-1 win.

Leamington took a 2-0 lead during the third period, only to have London storm back on a Noah Schwartz goal 18:55 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Flyers were led by goalie Matt Mancina, who finished with 25 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Mancina will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.9.

Leamington was paced by Chris Scott, who racked up one goal. Scott scored 14:26 into the third period to make the score Leamington. Cole Chevalier provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:50 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Nationals to score on any of their five power plays. Leamington forced London goalie Taylor Edwards to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

Tony Spidalieri also scored for Leamington. More assists for Leamington came via Alex Seguin and Nathan Opblinger, who each chipped in one.

The Nationals' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Leamington power plays. London could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Nationals average 4.0 goals per game.

Other players who recorded assists for London were Matt Fuller and Blake Thomas, who contributed one a piece.

The Flyers ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. Leamington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jacob McGhee was ejected from the game. Edwards rejected 41 shots on goal for London. The Nationals ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For London, Scott Lombardi was ejected from the game.
