Caledonia squeaks by Guelph, 6-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Caledonia Corvairs escaped with a 6-4 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Simon Blythe's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Guelph's power play was ineffective against Caledonia's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Corvairs were sparked by Blythe, who registered one goal. Blythe scored 17:13 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Caledonia. Brier Jonathan provided the assist.

Caledonia forced the Hurricanes' netminders to work without much rest, firing 34 shots and forcing 28 saves. Quinton Henry made 27 stops and Marcus Nepinak made one. The Corvairs excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Caledonia outdid its season average for goals scored. The Corvairs average 3.9 goals per game. Caledonia's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. The Corvairs could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game.

Caledonia additionally got points from Mitch Brown, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Nate Mitton, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ryan Blunt also scored for Caledonia. Other players who recorded assists for Caledonia were Justin Abraham, Connor Murphy, Jeff Swift, and Brendan Bomberry, who each chipped in one.

Guelph excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Caledonia to get one power play goal on 11 chances. The Hurricanes got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Guelph could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Hurricanes were helped by Dustin Baker, who registered one goal. Baker scored 17:24 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Guelph. Matt Nightingale assisted on the tally. Guelph also got points from Nightingale, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Guelph also got a goal from Nico Giannantonio as well. More assists for Guelph came via Mike Wilkins, who had two and Brock Malatches, John Najafi, and Zach McFadden, who contributed one a piece.

The Corvairs' Zach Easvet stopped 17 shots out of the 21 that he faced.
