Chatham blows out St. Marys, 6-1Pyramid Recreation Centre Fri, Dec 21, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Chatham Maroons were firing on all cylinders against the St. Marys Lincolns, and when the final buzzer sounded Maroons emerged with a 6-1 win. Chatham was led by goalie Darien Ekblad, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Ekblad will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.0. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:09 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Maroons stifled St. Marys' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Chatham forced the Lincolns goalie Craig Wood to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. The Maroons struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 24 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays. Chatham was led by Michael Verboom, who tallied two goals and one assist. Verboom scored the first of his two goals at 9:56 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Chatham. Eric Palazzolo provided the assist. Verboom's next tally made the score 6-1 Chatham with 7:56 left in the third period. Evan Mascaro assisted on the tally. Chatham also got points from Brayden Hopkins, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Trevor Richardson also scored for Chatham. More assists for Chatham came via Alexander Morgan, who had two and Morris Branden, Steven Szekesy, Connor Doran, and Blake Blondeel, who contributed one a piece. St. Marys racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and two majors for 56 minutes in penalty time. The Lincolns surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Marys could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Lincolns average 3.2 goals per game. St. Marys was led by Tyson Baker, who scored the team's only goal. Baker scored 6:30 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Chatham. David Sproat picked up the assist. The Maroons registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For Chatham, Branden and Hopkins were ejected from the contest. Wood rejected 29 shots on goal for the Lincolns. Team's Danny Bryan, Sproat, and Sean Consitt were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
