Chatham holds on for 4-3 win against Leamington

The Chatham Maroons survived a determined comeback attempt by the Leamington Flyers on the way to a 4-3 win.

Chatham took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Leamington storm back on a Nathan Opblinger goal 19:07 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Maroons pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 26 penalty minutes.

Chatham was helped by Brayden Hopkins, who registered one goal. Hopkins scored 10:46 into the third period to make the score Chatham. Michael Verboom picked up the assist. Jake Flegel also scored for Chatham. In addition, Chatham received assists from Brennan Feasey, who had two and Morris Branden, Ben Pataki, Steven Szekesy, and Sean Myers, who contributed one a piece.

The Flyers' offense rang up 50 shots on the Maroons' net. Leamington found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays.

The Flyers were helped by Jared Dennis, who tallied one goal. Dennis scored on the power play 14:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington. Leamington had gotten the advantage when Chatham's Flegel was sent off for head contact. Eric Leardi provided the assist. Leamington also got a goal from Troy Cox as well. Other players who recorded assists for Leamington were Alex Seguin, who had two and Joe Manchurek, Tony Spidalieri, and Aaron Thibert, who each chipped in one.

Darien Ekblad recorded 47 saves for the Maroons. The Flyers' Matt Mancina stopped 26 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Leamington registered one goal on eight power play opportunities.
