Welland rides McDougall to victory over St. Catharines, 4-1Welland Arena Sun, Dec 09, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Welland Jr. Canadians relied on the sparkling performance of Chris McDougall in net to grab a 4-1 win against the St. Catharines Falcons. Welland was led by Drake Lynds, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Lynds scored 18:20 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. Adam Mataya assisted on the tally. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:10 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Jr. Canadians forced Falcons' goalies to work between the pipes, totaling 36 shots and forcing 32 saves. Jonathon D Ilario made nine stops and Marcus Del Conte made 23. Welland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Brooker Muir also scored for Welland. More assists for Welland came via Chris Brown, Jason Lacroix, Spencer Giles, and Ryan Migliaccio, who each chipped in one. St. Catharines racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 74 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game the Falcons had been spending in the box. St. Catharines did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Falcons average 6.2 goals per game. St. Catharines kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and McDougall made 33 saves on 34 shots. The Falcons' penalty kill managed to stymie Welland's power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down. St. Catharines was led by Nathan Granitto, who scored the team's only goal. Granitto scored 3:52 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Mitch Bursey provided the assist. The Jr. Canadians ended with 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors. For Welland, Braden Curry and Migliaccio were ejected from the contest. Team's Tyler Jackson, Aaron Taylor, and Julian Luciani were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
