Niagara Falls vanquishes Port Colborne in shootout, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Niagara Falls Canucks defeated the Port Colborne Pirates in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout.

Niagara Falls came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Canucks was down 5-3 after a power play goal by Port Colborne's Bryan Komasara at 8:55 in the third period. Niagara Falls knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Billy Saxton at 14:22 in the third period.

Cam Stewart and Darren Young provided the spark for the Canucks, combining for three goals and three assists. Stewart registered two goals and one assist and Young also notched one goal and two assists.

The Pirates were unable to stop Niagara Falls from sending pucks towards the net, and the Canucks eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The defense for Niagara Falls tightened up when it had players in the penalty box, as it let in one goal on 12 Port Colborne power plays. The Canucks' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Niagara Falls additionally got points from Young, who also had one goal and two assists. Frank Nemeth also scored for Niagara Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Johnny Curran and Cole Langan, who contributed one a piece.

The Pirates stifled Niagara Falls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Port Colborne forced the Canucks goalie Hunter Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 55 shots.

Port Colborne also got points from Michael Sharp, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Zack Deconilys, who also racked up one goal and two assists, and Dayne Phillips, who also finished with one goal and two assists. More assists for Port Colborne came via Dima Lavrenov, who had two and DYLAN BURDICK, Pat Murphy, and Charlie Izaguirre, who each chipped in one.

Niagara Falls' Johnson stopped 50 shots out of the 55 that he faced. The Canucks incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Morgan Hudson recorded 33 saves for the Pirates. Port Colborne incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. For the Pirates, John DiLorenzo was ejected from the game.
