Chatham squeaks by Sarnia, 6-5

The Chatham Maroons gutted out a close 6-5 win against the Sarnia Legionnaires.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Connor Doran at 15:54 of the third period.

Ian Faubert and Brayden Hopkins provided the spark for Chatham, combining for four goals and one assist. Faubert tallied two goals and one assist and Hopkins also added two goals.

Sarnia's power play was ineffective against the Maroons' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Chatham excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Maroons kept the Legionnaires' goalie busy throughout the game, and Sean Parker made 32 saves on 38 shots. Chatham's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Maroons finished with 24 penalty minutes.

Chatham additionally got points from Doran, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Chatham also got a goal from Steven Beenackers as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Michael Verboom, who had two, Thomas Eady, who had three, and Morris Branden, Trevor Richardson, Steven Szekesy, and Brennan Feasey, who contributed one a piece.

Sarnia put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Chatham to score on any of its four power plays. The Maroons were unable to stop the Legionnaires from sending pucks towards the net, and Sarnia eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

The Legionnaires were led by Nathan Mater, who had two goals. Mater scored the first of his two goals at 1:34 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Chatham. Hunter Tyczynski assisted on the tally. Mater's next tally made the score 3-3 with 9:16 left in the second period. Tyczynski picked up the assist. Jason Teschke also scored for Sarnia. More assists for Sarnia came via Matt Cimetta, Josh Kestner, and Steve Farlow, who each chipped in one.

Chatham's Darien Ekblad stopped 30 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Sarnia incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
