Elmira uses fast start to beat Guelph, 8-1

The Guelph Hurricanes fell behind early, and the Elmira Sugar Kings kept piling on the points on the way to an 8-1 victory.

Justin Cooke had one goal and two assists to lead Elmira. Cooke scored 11:04 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Elmira. Jake Weidner picked up the assist.

Guelph's power play was ineffective against the Sugar Kings' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:12 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Elmira made Hurricanes' netminders to work all game long, taking 58 shots and forcing 50 saves. Jason DaSilva made nine stops and Marcus Nepinak made 41. The Sugar Kings bested their season scoring average. Elmira has scored at the pace of 4.0 goals per game during the current campaign. The Sugar Kings were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time.

Elmira also got points from Brady Campbell, who also grabbed two goals and two assists and Weidner, who also registered two goals and two assists to lead the team in points. Elmira also got a goal from Rob Kohli as well. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Brandon Stewart, who had two and Brodie Whitehead, Cass Frey, Steven Jakiela, Matt Sheick, Cash Seraphim, Mitch Wright, and Pete Croal, who contributed one a piece.

Elmira's Hayden Neuman stopped 20 shots out of the 21 that he faced. The Sugar Kings registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Elmira ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Pat McKelvie(APJ) was ejected from the game. The Hurricanes ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major. For Guelph, Patrick Kudla was ejected from the game.
