Collinson lifts St. Thomas over Sarnia, 6-2

The St. Thomas Stars relied on the scoring touch of Drew Collinson, who netted two goals, to beat the Sarnia Legionnaires, 6-2.

Collinson scored at 19:57 into the first period to make the score 3-2 St. Thomas and again while 17 seconds into the second to make the score 4-2 St. Thomas.

St. Thomas excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Stars kept Sarnia's goalie busy throughout the game, and Sean Parker made 33 saves on 39 shots.

Others who scored for St. Thomas included Colin Mooney, who had two and Kevin Zacharuk and Michael Lucifora, who scored one goal each. In addition, St. Thomas received assists from Matt Schurr, Cam Garrow, Ian MacDonald, and Chris Maton, who contributed one a piece and Scott Mitchell, Mike Iacocca, and Martin Kudla, who each chipped in two.

The Legionnaires put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow St. Thomas to score on any of its five power plays.

Sarnia was led by Davis Boyer, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Boyer scored short handed 10:44 into the first period to make the score 2-1 St. Thomas. The Legionnaires were on a disadvantage when Jason Teschke went off the ice for slashing. Nathan Mater provided the assist. Sarnia also got a goal from Jeff Bauer as well. More assists for Sarnia came via Tyler Prong, who had one.

Donald Edwards recorded 28 saves for the Stars. St. Thomas ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Stars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Maton was ejected from the game. Sarnia ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For the Legionnaires, PJ Vandervaart was ejected from the game.
