Fort Erie survives Welland comeback, wins 6-5

The Fort Erie Meteors, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Fort Erie and clinched a 6-5 victory.

The Meteors led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Fort Erie's Nik Passero's scored at 18:57 in the first period to put the Meteors up 5-2.

Fort Erie got the win behind a great game by Jonathan England, who had one goal and two assists. England scored on the power play 18:20 into the first period to make the score 4-2 Fort Erie. A slashing penalty on Gabe Ruggi had put the Meteors on the power play. Jesse Parker picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:48 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Fort Erie forced Jr. Canadians' netminders to work in net, launching 36 shots and forcing 30 saves. Chris McDougall made 21 stops and Matt Coulombe made nine. The Meteors put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Welland Jr. Canadians to score on any of their three power plays. Fort Erie outdid its season average for goals scored. The Meteors have scored at the pace of 2.9 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Fort Erie were also effective in Welland's zone, and came away with two goals.

Fort Erie additionally got points from Parker, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Passero, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Jordan Bailey, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Mike Boles also scored for Fort Erie. In addition, Fort Erie received assists from Carson Johnstone, who had two and Austin Carroll, Mac Passero, Cameron Fairgrieve, Kyle Davis, and Andrew Reis, who contributed one a piece.

The the Jr. Canadians penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Welland had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Meteors were unable to stop the Jr. Canadians from sending pucks towards the net, and Welland eventually piled up 47 shots on goal.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Drake Lynds, who finished with one goal and one assist. Lynds scored 10:35 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Fort Erie. Spencer Giles assisted on the tally. Welland also got points from Giles, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Welland also got a goal from Matt Gillard as well. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Ryan Migliaccio, who had two and Adam Mataya, Chris Brown, Mack Seebach, and Derrik Vannas, who each chipped in one.

Connor Visca rejected 42 shots on goal for Fort Erie. The Meteors totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 2-for-8 on the power play. Fort Erie ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Reis was ejected from the game. For Welland, Seebach was ejected from the game.
