Elmira holds on for 3-1 win against Brampton

The Brampton Bombers tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Elmira Sugar Kings would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-1.

Elmira took a 3-0 lead during the second period, only to have Brampton storm back on a Josh Villaflor goal 3:57 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Sugar Kings' Mackenzie Blackwood was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 31 saves and let only one puck past him. Blackwood managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.62 prior to the game.

Elmira forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. The Sugar Kings surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. The Bombers were unable to stop Elmira from sending pucks towards the net, and the Sugar Kings eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Elmira was helped by Brady Campbell, who had one goal. Campbell scored 5:13 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Elmira. Jake Weidner assisted on the tally. Elmira also got a goal from Cass Frey as well. More assists for Elmira came via Rob Kohli, who had one.

Brampton forced the Sugar Kings goalie Blackwood to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. The Bombers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

Other players who recorded assists for Brampton were Nik Borschevsky, who had one.

Elmira registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Craig Johnson, Brodie Whitehead, Frey, and Cash Seraphim were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Erik Angeli rejected 33 shots on goal for Brampton. The Bombers registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For Brampton, Kyle Allan and Kurt Wolff were ejected from the contest.
