Guelph wins tough contest against Cambridge, 4-2Galt Arena Gardens Sat, Nov 24, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Guelph Hurricanes and the Cambridge Winter Hawks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Guelph made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2. Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Blair McIntosh's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker. Matt Lippa had two goals to lead the Hurricanes to victory. Lippa's tallies came on the power play at 11:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Guelph and 6:02 into the third to make the score 3-1 Guelph. Guelph pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 34 penalty minutes. The Hurricanes outdid their season average for goals scored. Guelph has scored at the pace of 1.9 goal per game during the current campaign. Guelph additionally got points from Sebastian Stangherlin, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Ben Rolefson, Craig Martini, John Najafi, Ian Chan, Jordan Hatzinger, and Zach McFadden, who each chipped in one. Cambridge's offense rang up 36 shots on the Hurricanes' net. The Winter Hawks were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to one goal off of nine man advantages. Cambridge was helped by Brennon Pearce, who registered one goal. Pearce scored on the power play 11:54 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Winter Hawks had gotten the advantage when Guelph's Najafi was sent off for head contact. Cody Gratton assisted on the tally. Cambridge also got a goal from Maxime Lamontagne as well. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Aaron Duggan and Todd Bannermon, who contributed one a piece. Jason DaSilva made 34 saves for the Hurricanes on 36 shots. Guelph registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Cambridge's Lucas Machalski stopped 17 shots out of the 21 that he faced. The Winter Hawks incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tyler Snyder was ejected from the game.
