Niagara Falls beats Thorold 6-4 after comeback scare

The Thorold Blackhawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Niagara Falls Canucks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-4.

Niagara Falls took a 6-3 lead during the third period, only to have Thorold storm back on a Mackenzie Mac Avoy goal 18:32 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Canucks were led by Darren Young, who finished with one goal and one assist. Young scored on the power play 42 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls had gotten the advantage when the Blackhawks' Ed Creighton was sent off for pre-game violation. Brad Kri provided the assist.

The Canucks forced Thorold's goaltenders to work without much rest, totaling 43 shots and forcing 37 saves. Vinny Merante made 28 stops and Blake Richard made nine. Niagara Falls' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Niagara Falls additionally got points from Johnny Curran, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Garrett Gallardi, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Jamie Cardamone also scored for Niagara Falls. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from Tory McLean, Michael Christou, Drew Berkel, Mitch McIntosh, and Frank Nemeth, who contributed one a piece.

The Blackhawks kept the Canucks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Hunter Johnson made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Thorold also got points from Mark Arnone, who also had one goal and one assist. Thorold also got a goal from Vince Dunn as well. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Adrian Copeland, who had three and Owen Sobchak and Matthew Hoszko, who each chipped in one.

Niagara Falls incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. For the Canucks, McIntosh was ejected from the game. Thorold incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
