Strathroy beats Thorold 5-4 after comeback scare

The Thorold Blackhawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Strathroy Rockets would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

A goal by Adam Vandersluis put Strathroy up 5-2 in the third period, but Thorold pulled to within one on Adrian Copeland's tally 18:32 into the third period.

Nick Boyer was all over the ice for the Rockets, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Boyer scored 1:49 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Strathroy. Matthew Watson assisted on the tally.

Strathroy racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Rockets had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. Strathroy's offense rang up 36 shots on the Blackhawks' net. The Rockets cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Strathroy additionally got points from Vandersluis, who also registered one goal and two assists and Max Naus, who also had one goal and one assist. Trevor Dulong also scored for Strathroy. More assists for Strathroy came via Tyler Duarte, Brett Dalton, Kurtis Sander, and Wes Baker, who contributed one a piece.

Thorold kept Strathroy's goalie busy throughout the game, and Gordie Weiss made 36 saves on 40 shots.

The Blackhawks were helped by Mark Arnone, who tallied one goal and one assist. Arnone scored 1:22 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Strathroy. Vince Dunn picked up the assist. Thorold also got points from Mackenzie Mac Avoy, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Thorold also got a goal from Myles Falasca as well. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Matthew Hoszko and Tanner Pagendam, who each chipped in one.

For the Rockets, Luke Jackson was ejected from the game. Vinny Merante recorded 31 saves for Thorold. The Blackhawks totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Denis Creighton was ejected from the game.
