Early goals doom St. Marys, falls to Chatham, 8-1

A four-goal first period deficit cost the St. Marys Lincolns, which could not recover and fell to the Chatham Maroons, 8-1.

St. Marys' power play was ineffective against Chatham's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Maroons were led by Eric Palazzolo, who had one goal and one assist. Palazzolo scored 2:21 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Chatham. Ian Faubert picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:19 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Chatham penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 48 minutes in penalty time. The Maroons had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Chatham's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight St. Marys power plays. The Maroons' offense rang up 35 shots on the Lincolns' net. Chatham's goal total was higher than its season average. The Maroons have scored at the pace of 4.4 goals per game during the current campaign.

Chatham additionally got points from Jake Flegel, who also registered one goal and two assists, Jay Ritchie, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Connor Doran, who also registered one goal and one assist, Faubert, who also had one goal and one assist, and Michael Levesque, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Chatham also got a goal from Alexander Morgan as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Nate Pietens, Steven Szekesy, Oliver Blayne, Brayden Hopkins, Michael Verboom, and Steven Beenackers, who each chipped in one.

St. Marys was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. The Lincolns surpassed its season average of 29.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Marys excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Lincolns did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. St. Marys puts an average of 3.8 pucks into the net per game.

The Lincolns were led by Calvin Penney, who scored the team's only goal. Penney scored 11:35 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Chatham. Mike Mandarelli assisted on the tally.

Darien Ekblad made 18 saves for Chatham on 19 shots. For the Maroons, Ben Pataki, Szekesy, and Hopkins were ejected from the contest. St. Marys' Craig Wood stopped 27 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Team's Tyler Bryson and Owen MacDonald were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
