Welland rips Fort Erie, 5-1

The Welland Jr. Canadians had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Fort Erie Meteors.

Welland's Chris McDougall was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 37 saves and let only one puck past him. McDougall certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.48 entering the contest.

The Jr. Canadians forced Meteors' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, taking 51 shots and forcing 46 saves. Connor Visca made 22 stops and Wyatt Pickrell made 24. Welland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Cole McKnight, who registered two goals. McKnight scored the first of his two goals at 7:35 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. Mack Seebach assisted on the tally. McKnight's next tally made the score 3-0 Welland with 13:59 left in the second period. Braden Curry picked up the assist. Welland also got a goal from Matt Gillard as well. More assists for Welland came via Derrik Vannas, who had two and Adam Mataya, Brooker Muir, Tyler Stranges, and Spencer Giles, who contributed one a piece.

Fort Erie put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Welland to score on any of its 11 power plays. The Meteors were held below their usual level of production. Fort Erie averages 3.2 goals per game. The Meteors' offense rang up 38 shots on the Jr. Canadians' net.

Welland incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and McKnight was ejected from the game. Fort Erie incurred 40 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
