Thorold beats Welland 3-2 after comeback scare

The Welland Jr. Canadians tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Thorold Blackhawks held on for a 3-2 victory.

Thorold made the score 3-1 on a goal by Mackenzie Mac Avoy at 15:09 in the third period, and Welland got as close as 3-2 when Ryan Migliaccio scored 16:10 into the third period.

The Blackhawks' penalty kill excelled, as Thorold gave up zero goals despite allowing 10 power plays.

The Blackhawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. Thorold surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blackhawks stifled the Jr. Canadians' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Thorold kept Welland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Coulombe made 36 saves on 39 shots.

Thorold also got a goal from Owen Sobchak as well. In addition, Thorold received assists from Kevin Lavoie, Ed Creighton, Adrian Copeland, Vince Dunn, and Dan Chudobiak, who contributed one a piece.

The Jr. Canadians stifled the Blackhawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Thorold was unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Chris Brown also scored for Welland. More assists for Welland came via Cole McKnight, who had two and Jason Lacroix and Braden Curry, who each chipped in one.

Vinny Merante recorded 34 saves for the Blackhawks. Thorold registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For the Blackhawks, Brian Brosnan and Denis Creighton were ejected from the contest. Welland incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
